Bacary Sagna Exclusive: Arsenal Should Sign Saint-Maximin

Former Gunners defender Bacary Sagna says he would “love to see Allan Saint-Maximin wearing an Arsenal shirt”.

The Gunners have already been active in the transfer market this summer, moving to secure the signatures of Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner – and they look set to continue spending.

A left-back, a midfielder and a winger appear to be on manager Mikel Arteta’s wishlist, as Arsenal aim to take their talented young squad to the next level.

Sagna would like to see his old club sign Saint-Maximin for that vacant wide role – but is not sure the Newcastle star would be guaranteed enough playing time.

Arsenal Should Sign Saint-Maximin

Speaking exclusively to Lord Ping, he said: “The one player I really like, but I’m not sure Arsenal could sign him because he would want to play every game, is Allan Saint-Maximin.

“I really like this player a lot. I love the way he plays – with so many tricks and skills – he is a nightmare for any defender.

“I would love to see him play for Arsenal because it is a joy to watch him play and I think he would provide a spark and something different in the squad.

“He is a player that can electrify a match, a stadium and make the difference. I would love to see him wearing an Arsenal shirt.”

Tielemans Links

One midfield star consistently linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium is Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian, 25, scored six goals and registered four assists in the Premier League last term – and Sagna believes he would fit in well in North London.

“He [Tielemans] did well at Monaco and he has been excellent for Leicester,” he explained.

“He has a lot of qualities and is a good passer of the ball.

“He is a very good player and a player like him could be a positive addition for the club.”

Captain Candidates

Since the January departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal have been without a permanent club captain.

And Sagna has suggested that Gabriel, Aaron Ramsdale or Bukayo Saka could be candidates for the armband.

“It’s difficult for me to say categorically [who should be Arsenal captain] because I don’t see these players every day, but whoever steps up and takes the armband will be someone who must have a positive impact on the team,” he said.

“A captain needs to have a strong mentality and be a natural leader.

“I think there are three outstanding candidates who possess the qualities any team looks for in a captain.

“Gabriel could be a contender, I think Ramsdale has shown his personality – although I personally prefer a captain outfield rather than in goal – and then you have Saka who is the future of the team and has shown his commitment and quality, every time he plays for Arsenal.”
